THE PALOS VERDES PENINSULA, WHICH PROTRUDES INTO THE PACIFIC OCEAN, IS AN AFFLUENT COMMUNITY KNOWN FOR ITS DRAMATIC OCEAN AND CITY VIEWS. IN THE SURROUNDING PALOS VERDES HILLS, AMONG DISTINGUISHED SUBURBAN NEIGHBORHOODS AND A NATURE CONSERVANCY IS THE ROLLING HILLS, ADMINISTRATION AND CLASSROOM BUILDING. THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS AN ADDITION TO AN EXISTING SPRAWLING SCHOOL CAMPUS SET WITHIN A LUSH TREE LINED PARCEL, OVERLOOKING A SMALL RESERVOIR. HERE, THE TRIANGULAR SHAPE OF THE DEVELOPABLE SITE AREA DETERMINED THE BUILDING’S DRAMATIC SHAPE, WHICH IS ALSO REMINISCENT OF THE UNIQUE PENINSULAR LAND FORM OF PALOS VERDES. SIMPLE STRIPS OF SOLID AND VOID AND PITCHED ROOF ARE CONTEXTUAL ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES WHICH RELATE TO THE EXISTING CAMPUS BUILDINGS, WHILE ALSO PROVIDING A QUIET BACKDROP FOR THE SCENIC LANDSCAPE. PLAN FUNCTIONS INCLUDE OPEN OFFICE SPACES ON SECOND FLOOR AND PRIMARY SCHOOL CLASSROOMS ON THE LOWER FLOOR. THE PROJECT WAS COMPLETED IN 2011.
